‘PARIRAKSHA’ – COVID-19 Protection Initiatives by Vivekananda Darshanika Samajam (VDS)

Organized by Vivekananda Darshanika Samajam (VDS)

In the year 2020, Vivekananda Darshanika Samajam (VDS) had undertaken a series of impactful activities under the initiative ‘PARIRAKSHA’, conceived as a dedicated COVID-19 protection program. These measures were guided by the vision of proactive community support, technological innovation, and compassionate service inspired by Swami Vivekananda’s ideals.

Vehicle Disinfection Tunnels at Walayar Checkpost

In what is believed to be the first initiative of its kind in India, the Samajam presented two Vehicle Disinfection Tunnels to the Walayar Checkpost, the interstate border between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. These tunnels were installed to sanitize vehicles entering Kerala, thereby reducing the risk of viral transmission across state lines. This pioneering effort received wide media attention and was featured in The Hindu. Foot-Operated Sink and Body Sanitizer System

As part of infection prevention measures for frontline personnel, VDS designed and built a Foot-Operated Sink and Body Sanitizer System. This fully functional unit was formally handed over to Palakkad South Police Station to help ensure safer hygiene practices among police officers and visitors. In recognition of this timely contribution, the Kerala Police awarded a Certificate of Merit to the Samajam, honoring its dedicated service to public health.

UVC-Based Disinfection Solutions

Recognizing the urgent need for safe disinfection of public spaces and equipment, VDS constituted a Scientific Research Team to develop practical solutions utilizing UVC (Ultraviolet-C) light technology. International studies have proven UVC’s effectiveness in destroying bacteria and viruses by disrupting their genetic material, without the use of chemicals or harmful residues.

VDS facilitated the installation of India’s first UVC-based disinfection system in a beauty parlour, under the ‘PARIRAKSHA’ project. The system was set up at Style Beauty Parlour in Sreekrishnapuram, Palakkad. The inauguration was conducted on 17th June, 2020 by Hon. Palakkad MP Sri V.K. Sreekandan. The disinfection unit features two Philips-manufactured lamps imported from Poland—a 3-foot 30W UVC lamp and a 1-foot 8W UVC lamp. This system operates without chemicals and effectively neutralizes pathogens without any side effects, thus offering a safer environment for customers and staff.

As part of extending UVC technology to more sectors, on 22 September 2020, a state-of-the-art UVC disinfection unit, comprising advanced UVC lamps and a UV driver imported from Poland, was formally handed over to the District Government Hospital, Palakkad. The system was presented by C.A. Ajith Sivadas, Advisor to VDS, to the hospital’s Superintendent Dr. Ramadevi. This installation enables rapid disinfection of hospital equipment and surfaces within minutes, offering a vital layer of safety for both healthcare professionals and patients.

‘PARIRAKSHA’ Helpline

In addition to physical infrastructure, VDS established a 24×7 Helpline under the ‘PARIRAKSHA’ scheme to assist those in urgent need of food or medicines during lockdowns. Callers facing severe hardship could receive immediate support, including financial assistance up to ₹1,000. This helpline has been operational without interruption for over a year, extending relief to hundreds of families.

Conclusion

The activities undertaken under ‘PARIRAKSHA’ demonstrated the power of combining scientific innovation, community engagement, and the ideals of selfless service. Whether through technological contributions like UVC disinfection systems and vehicle tunnels, humanitarian aid via the helpline, or support to frontline workers, the Vivekananda Darshanika Samajam has shown that collective resolve and compassion can overcome the gravest challenges.
